How to make a pitch deck with AI (step by step with Gamma)

Published 17 October 2026 · Pricing checked 17 Oct 2026

How we research: we compare each tool’s features, pricing and official guidance, and add hands-on notes as we test. We haven’t been paid to include any tool.

Whether it’s for investors, a bank, a big customer or a tender panel, a pitch deck is mostly a story with numbers attached. AI can’t supply the numbers or the conviction, but it can take your notes and produce a clean, consistent first draft. That saves the evening you’d otherwise spend nudging text boxes. Here’s how to do it well, and where it goes wrong.

Best pick

Gamma

The fastest route we know of from a prompt, notes or an existing file to a polished, editable deck, with export to PowerPoint and PDF. Visit Gamma ↗

Alternatives: Beautiful.ai for team decks that auto-format to stay on brand · Canva if you already design in Canva and want its huge template library.

The job

A typical small-business pitch deck runs to 10–15 slides: the problem, your solution, who the customer is and how big the market is, how you make money, traction so far, the team, the competition, the financials and the ask (how much, and what it’s for). Investors and lenders read dozens of these, so clarity beats decoration. The AI’s job is structure, layout and first-draft wording. Your job is the facts.

Our pick and two alternatives — and why

Gamma — best for a fast first draft

In Gamma you describe the deck in a prompt bar, paste notes or attach files, and its agent asks a few questions, shows a plan and then builds the slides (Gamma help: create with Agent). You can also import an existing PowerPoint, Word or PDF file and restyle it (import help), then export to PDF, PNG or PowerPoint (export help). Choose it when speed to a decent draft matters most.

Beautiful.ai — best for teams who need it on brand

Beautiful.ai’s Create with AI builds a text-only, slide-by-slide outline first, so you fix the story before any design happens. You then pick a theme, image source and language and click Generate Presentation (Beautiful.ai help). Its Smart Slides auto-align layouts, which keeps decks made by several people consistent. Choose it if several people build decks and brand consistency matters. It’s paid, with a 14-day free trial.

Canva — best if you already live in Canva

From the Canva homepage, Canva AI → Presentation drafts an outline you can adjust before choosing Generate presentation. You can upload files and apply a Brand Kit (Canva help). It’s the easiest option if your logo, colours and social graphics are already in Canva. Canva notes that AI presentations count towards your monthly AI usage.

Step by step: a pitch deck with Gamma

  1. Write your raw material first. One page of plain notes under the headings above, including your real numbers: revenue, margins, customers, the amount you’re raising. Good input matters more than a clever prompt.
  2. Sign up and check your data setting. Create a free account at gamma.app. On individual plans, Gamma’s default allows your content to be used to train its AI, so before uploading financials go to Settings → Data Controls and opt out if you prefer (Gamma data controls).
  3. Start from the prompt bar. On the dashboard, describe the deck, e.g. “12-slide investor pitch deck for a Manchester-based eco cleaning products brand raising £250,000, UK English, plain and confident tone”. Paste your notes, or click + → Upload files to attach them (Gamma help).
  4. Pick a mode. Plan (the default) asks questions and shows its plan before building; Express skips straight to a draft; Research pulls sources from the web first. Use Plan for anything that matters.
  5. Review the plan, then generate. Check the slide order and titles match your story before Gamma builds. Add a template or your own images with + if you want a specific look.
  6. Edit slide by slide. Click the sparkle icon on any slide to edit it with AI, or edit by hand (Gamma creation help). Replace every generic sentence with something specific to you, and check every number against your notes.
  7. Export. Click Share → Export (or the three-dot menu → Export), choose PDF or PowerPoint, and set the dropdown to All cards or you may export just one slide (export help). Open the PowerPoint file and check it: gradients and some effects can change, and the slide master will be blank. Speaker notes are included.
  8. Send a PDF, keep the editable file. Investors usually prefer a PDF or a link; keep the PPTX for edits and your data room.

Rough time saved

Our rough estimate, not a measured result: going from notes to a tidy first draft by hand can take an afternoon; with an AI draft it could be closer to an hour including edits. The thinking still takes as long as it always did. Budget the same time for your numbers, story and rehearsal.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Invented or unsourced figures. AI will happily write a market-size number. Use your own data, and if you use Research mode, open every source it cites before you keep a figure.
  • Generic copy. “Revolutionising the industry” tells an investor nothing. Swap in specifics: customer names (with permission), prices, dates.
  • Running out of credits. Gamma’s free plan gives 400 credits at sign-up that don’t refresh; generations are metered per slide and per image (Gamma credits). Don’t burn them on endless regenerations. Edit by hand instead.
  • Export surprises. Always open the exported file before sending it. Gamma’s export article also covers removing the Gamma watermark, so check what applies on your plan.
  • Too many slides. If the AI gives you 20, cut to the ones that carry the story.

The UK angle: SEIS/EIS, confidentiality and pricing

If you’re raising equity, UK angel investors often ask whether the round qualifies for SEIS or EIS tax relief. If you’ve applied for HMRC advance assurance, say so on the ask slide. See GOV.UK: apply for advance assurance. Don’t claim eligibility you haven’t confirmed.

Confidential numbers: treat uploaded financials and customer names as business-sensitive. Opt out of AI training where the tool allows it (Gamma: Settings → Data Controls). If a slide includes personal data such as named customer quotes, make sure you have permission to use them.

FAQ

Can AI make an investor-ready pitch deck?
It can make a clean, well-structured first draft quickly. Making it investor-ready is still your job: real numbers, a clear ask, specific evidence of traction, and a story you can defend in questions.
Is Gamma free to use?
Gamma has a free plan. New free users get 400 AI credits that don’t refresh, and you can earn more through referrals (Gamma help). Check current paid plans on Gamma’s pricing page.
Can I export a Gamma deck to PowerPoint or Google Slides?
Yes. Gamma exports to PDF, PNG and PowerPoint (PPTX), and Google Slides via a PPTX upload. Choose ‘All cards’ in the export dropdown, then check the file, because some visual effects render differently.
Does Gamma use my deck to train its AI?
On individual plans (Free, Plus, Pro, Ultra) the default allows it, but you can opt out in Settings → Data Controls. Gamma says Business and Enterprise workspaces are always excluded from training.
Gamma, Beautiful.ai or Canva — which should I choose?
Gamma for the fastest draft from notes, Beautiful.ai if a team needs consistent on-brand decks, and Canva if your brand assets already live there and you want templates with pricing shown in pounds.
